Pediatric Palliative Care Master Class at Dhaka Medical College

Dhaka Medical College and Hospital recently hosted the first Paediatric Palliative Care Master Class in Bangladesh. This 3-day intensive training event was attend by more than 85 pediatricians, palliative care physicians, nurses, pharmacists, palliative care assistants, and social workers.
The workshop included three external faculty, with extensive experience in the field of Paediatric Palliative Care: Dr. Lulu Mathews (Institute of Palliative Medicine, Kerala), Dr. Gayatri Palat (MNJ Institute of Oncology and RCC, Hyderabad) and Dr. Pradnya Talawadekar (Children's Palliative Care Project, Mumbai). Pictograms can be used to help patients and families understand how to take pain medications. Recently, the team at BSMMU conducted focus groups with health care providers and caregivers to understand what information should be incorporated into pictograms for pain medication counselling. This feedback will be incorporated into some new counselling tools for patients and caregivers.

The goal of this workshop was to equip nurses to be leaders and teachers, acknowledging the vital role which nurses have in providing high quality palliative care.
