Palliative Care Services

CPCIB provides support to strengthen palliative care services for children in Bangladesh, which will improve the quality of life for children and families.

Korail Slum Children's Palliative Care Project

In partnership with the Centre for Palliative Care at BSMMU, the CPCIB supported a survey to evaluate the needs of children with life-threatening or life-limiting conditions living in an urban slum in Dhaka.

Children with cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, congenital heart disease and other medical problems have been identified. We are now working with local slum community organizations to develop more supports for these children.

After completing this survey, a comprehensive home-based palliative care service has been developed which provides care for all children in Korail Slum who have life-threatening or life-limiting illnesses.

  • A dedicated team of doctors, nurses and palliative care assistants visit children who need palliative care in Korail slum.

  • The team provides family support (food and medicines), medical treatment for pain and others symptoms

  • Several children and mothers recently went to the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralyzed for a 10-day inpatient rehabilitation program, specifically designed to address the needs of children with cerebral palsy

  • A physiotherapist comes once per week to provide care to the children with cerebral palsy and other neurological problems

  • The team has improved the treatment of muscles spasms in many children and aggressive behaviour in some others.

  • With the support of the team, the quality of life for many children is improving.
